DAY ONE – THURSDAY – THE GREAT GLEN ADVENTURE
On our first day of the Tour, we’ll journey south down the Great Glen past Loch Ness, Loch Oich and Loch Lochy, into the historic town of Fort William, the second-largest settlement in the Scottish Highlands.
Visit the West Highland Museum, which houses many items from the Jacobite Uprisings, unique artifacts belonging to, or portraying Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie), plus many items from the Governor’s Office in the actual Fort of Fort William, which for Outlander fans, would have been Black Jack’s Office…
Enjoy some shopping time along Fort William High Street, where we’ll recount ghostly tales and stories of murders and robberies past, and show you where these gruesome events took place.
You’ll see where Scotland’s most skilled 17th century swordsman is buried, as we share his utterly remarkable life story with you and the legacy he left behind.
You’ll see the remains of the Old Fort which gave Fort William its name, and we’ll share it’s history with you, aided with some very old and rare books telling the story. This is also an Outlander book location
See the 13th century medieval stronghold, which dominated the southern end of the Great Glen.
We’ll visit a family-run Highland Skincare Shop, nestled beneath Ben Nevis, where organic soaps and lotions are handcrafted using wild-harvested Highland botanicals — the shop is a wonderful shopping experience and well worth a browse. It’s the perfect way to bring a little of the Highlands back home with you.
Visit Glenfinnan – the very place the Jacobite Rising of 1745 officially began. We’ll share with you how the 1745 uprising unfolded, and stop by some places of historic significance along the way.
Walk up to a spectacular viewpoint over Loch Shiel, where you’ll be able to capture stunning photos over the Glenfinnan Monument and Viaduct.
Watch the Harry Potter Jacobite Steam Train as it passes over the famous curved Glenfinnan Viaduct. Yes, we will ensure you are there to see the Hogwarts Express!
Visit Neptune’s Staircase, part of the Caledonian Canal, where you can see the eight locks descending into Loch Linnhe. This amazing feat of engineering raises the canal by 19m (62ft) over a quarter of a mile and takes 90 minutes for a boat to travel up or down. Built by Thomas Telford between 1803 and 1822, it is the longest staircase lock in Scotland.
Enjoy views of Ben Nevis – the UK’s highest mountain.
Explore explore a very unusual place which tells an extremely gory tale of revenge – a story which is not likely to be forgotten anytime soon!
Pass through the pretty town of Fort Augustus at the southern end of Loch Ness. Here you’ll see the five locks of the Caledonian Canal which allow the boats to sail between the Lochs of the Great Glen.
DAY TWO – FRIDAY – THE BLACK ISLE ADVENTURE
One of our many favourite places in the Highlands, join us as we take you on an educational journey around the historic Highland Fishing Villages of the Black Isle.
You’ll learn about the famous people who lived here in centuries gone by, each of whom left an extraordinary legacy. It is rare that so many notable people lived in such a relatively small area of the Highlands. We have weaved their stories together, so you can walk in their footsteps as you learn about their lives, stand in front of their homes, see the places they frequented, and experience the Highlands through their eyes.
This day includes:
- Some fabulous museums, which we will guide you around.
- Old Scottish fishing villages which have hardly changed in centuries.
- Antique shops.
- The numerous famous Authors of the Black Isle.
- One of Europe’s most popular places to watch dolphins.
- The Cromarty Emigration Stone.
- Pictish Stones.
- Ancient graveyards, including going underground into a very spooky crypt.
- A special and unique church, which holds amazing stories and secrets.
- Fortrose Cathedral.
- The Black Isle Brewery.
- The Clootie Well (an Outlander book location).
The day also includes a privately hosted viewing of the incredible legacy left by one very special man (his name and story will be revealed on the tour itself) – this is definitely an experience not to be missed!
This unique day includes not only beautiful Highland scenery, but a memorable and inspirational insight into the lives and culture of the Highland people from the small parishes of the Black Isle. We feel deeply honoured to share their legacies and lives with you on this tour.
DAY THREE – SATURDAY – THE CAIRNGORM ADVENTURE
As we journey south through the Cairngorm National Park, you can enjoy some shopping time in Aviemore, before visiting a beautiful Loch at the foot of Cairngorm Mountain.
Browse through some wonderfully rustic Highland shops in the wilderness, before popping in to the Reindeer Centre.
Visit a Highland Museum where you can step back in time and experience life in the Highlands from 1700s to the 1950s. The museum has over 35 historical buildings to explore. If you have Scottish ancestors from the Highlands, then you’ll learn how they lived, built their homes, farmed, dressed and spent their leisure time. (The Old Township part of this Museum was the Outlander Filming location for the ‘Rent’ episode).
Explore a Clan Museum which shares the story of family and belonging, loyalty and rebellion, where the history of the Clan is told by tradition-bearers and storytellers. Here you will find fascinating treasures dating back through many centuries.
During the afternoon, you’ll experience a unique Gin Tasting led by a member of the Distillery Team, who will teach you about the local botanics infused into each type of gin as you taste each one. This place embraces the very essence of the Highlands into their whole distillation and bottling process. The price of the Gin Tasting is included on your tour.
We’ll finish this day with a visit to our favourite Antique Centre, where you can browse through their collection of Scottish treasures to see if there’s anything special that catches your eye.
DAY FOUR – SUNDAY – THE LOCH NESS ADVENTURE
This day of the tour is a journey into the history, the experiences, and the lives of the people who lived in one remote and breathtakingly beautiful part of the Scottish Highlands close to Loch Ness. These are stories which have passed down through the generations, yet they are little known…
Visit the southern shores of Loch Ness, where you can take in the sheer grandeur and size of the largest body of water in the UK. From there we’ll share with you stories of the families who lived there during the 18th century, including the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden, which began the very same day as the battle itself. This includes the spot where two brave Jacobites succumbed to their injuries after the Battle of Culloden and were buried where they took their last breath.
Experience an immersive tour through Boleskine House, where you will be able to wander down the magnificent hallways and through the rooms of this very famous 18th century mansion. Boleskine House was built by one of Simon Lord Lovat’s sons (the Old Fox). It was owned for several years by Aleister Crowley and also Jimmy Page (Led Zepplin). After being destroyed by fire in 2015, the house has been rebuilt as the most spectacular monument to its very famous past.
If you’re an Outlander fan, we’ll take you to walk in the very footsteps of the real James Fraser – Dun Bonnet – who hid in a cave near here for seven years after the Battle of Culloden. This was his very own stomping ground. We’ll take you to the place his house once stood, and to the beach where he would have swam in Loch Ness.
You’ll walk out to explore the remains of a remote hidden Township on the banks of a loch which was once a bustling Highland village.
You’ll also see:
- First-hand, the devastating story behind one of Scotland’s most powerful clans.
- Caves frequented by robbers as we share the grisly stories of those they encountered.
- A graveyard which has a chilling and unexplainable story dating back to the mid 1600s.
- Stunning waterfalls which inspired Robbie Burns to write a poem.
- The exact spot, hidden on a hillside, where men were hanged and their bodies were left to blow in the wind as a warning to others.
Many famous travellers journeyed down this road in the 1700s and recounted their experiences of this hauntingly beautiful part of the Highlands in their books; Robbie Burns, Boswell and Johnson, Thomas Pennant… but it is not only their stories we will be sharing with you on this day of the tour, it is the stories of the Highlanders who actually lived and died here, and whose lives were unfolding while these famous travellers passed through.
We can promise you that you will never see Loch Ness in quite the same way again…
DAY FIVE – MONDAY – THE TORRIDON MOUNTAIN ADVENTURE
This day is a showcase of sheer Highland beauty. Mountains, glens, lochs and expansive white sandy beaches. This day takes in some of the western parts of the famous North Coast 500 route (NC500), one of the most beautiful drives in the world.
We’ll journey through the Torridon Mountains, made up of some of the oldest rocks in the world. These mountains are among the most dramatic and spectacular peaks in the Highlands.
Loch Maree has more than forty scattered islands on her waters. We’ll share with you the tales and traditions from these islands from centuries gone by. The islands bear the trees from the original Ancient Caledonian Pine Forest.
Inverewe Gardens – Discover a world of wonderful botanicals in these award-winning Gardens. Lose yourself in the lush setting and enjoy a riot of colours and scents. As well as the garden, the wider estate offers plenty to see and is home to Scotland’s ‘Big 5’ species: red squirrels, red deer, otters, seals and golden eagles. Explore Inverewe House, an interactive museum with a variety of objects to handle and games to play.
Pass through picturesque coastal villages nestled within the breath-taking scenery of Wester Ross and discover the Viking history from centuries gone by.
We’ll stop for many photo opportunities:
- Long white sandy beaches.
- Stunning viewpoints across the Minch to Skye, Raasay and the Western Isles.
- Remarkable views across the volcanic peaks of Assynt.
- You might even see a pod of whales offshore…
Later in the day we’ll take a short walk down onto a suspension bridge where you can gaze 60 metres down into Corrieshalloch Gorge and Waterfall, one of the natural wonders of the Scottish Highlands.
The following day is one of rest, so you can take in all you have experienced during the first half of this Tour.
TUESDAY – A DAY TO RELAX, RECHARGE AND EXPLORE INVERNESS AT YOUR LEISURE
DAY SIX – WEDNESDAY – THE CAWDOR & CULLODEN EXPERIENCE
To begin the day, we will take a deep dive into the folklore, mythology and archeaology surrounding the Bronze Age standing stones and cairns known as Clava Cairns (Balnuaran of Clava). Here you’ll learn, how the stones reflect the movements of the sun, the moon and the passing of the seasons.
The morning highlight will be a visit to explore spectacular Cawdor Castle and Gardens – a beautiful Scottish Castle built and inhabited by the Cawdor family for over 600 years.
Visit an ancient 13th Century Church ruin with many hidden stories. In this sacred place lies the remains of a brave young lass, who died of a broken heart just four months after her lover was slain at the Battle of Culloden. You’ll be standing in the very spot he fell just a few hours later.
Roam through a local Antique Shop, then enjoy a sit-down lunch in the very atmospheric Cawdor Tavern (lunch not included in price), which was built to give the estate workers a place to relax independently from Cawdor Castle and the Laird. The lounge bar is lined with oak panelling from Cawdor Castle’s dining room, which was gifted to the Tavern by the former Laird.
Explore Culloden Battlefield where you can walk with us over the Heather-covered moor as we recount how the Battle unfolded on that fateful day.
After that, you will receive a warm Highland welcome into our Culloden home, where you can see some of our large collection of Highland antiques, 18th century books, letters, parchments and newspaper articles, many relating to the 1745 uprising, Clan Fraser, Clan Mackenzie and The Forbes’ of Culloden. If you have been to our home on a previous tour, we can promise you that our antique collection has grown significantly…
We will end the day with a brief visit to see the exterior of Culloden House, where Bonnie Prince Charlie set up his HQ prior to 16 April 1746. Many of the Jacobite troops set up camp in the gardens surrounding the house prior to that fateful day on Culloden Moor which changed the future of Scotland forever. This was also an Outlander book location.
DAY SEVEN – THURSDAY – THE NORTH WEST HIGHLAND ADVENTURE
Today we’ll take you on a 200 mile journey through some of Scotland’s most spectacular mountains and glens, while you sit back and relax in comfort. We promised you the Highlands after all…
This day takes in some of the north western parts of the famous North Coast 500 route (NC500), one of the most stunning drives in the world.
We’ll visit the picturesque fishing town of Ullapool, surrounded by rugged mountains and nestled on the shores of Lochbroom. This town is the gateway to the Northern Highlands.
We’ll visit 15th century Ardvreck Castle, and share with you the notorious betrayal of Highland hospitality which unfolded there.
We’ll stop at many locations along the way:
- Kylesku Bridge.
- White sandy beaches.
- Historic ruins.
- Viewpoints.
- Waterfalls, where you’ll see Salmon jumping upstream…
On our way back to Inverness, we’ll stop at the Glenmorangie Distillery where you can enjoy a proper whisky tasting guided by our very own whisky expert – Andy – if you wish to (price not included on the tour).
DAY EIGHT – FRIDAY – THE GLEN AFFRIC ADVENTURE
You’ll begin the day with a Cruise down Loch Ness, where you’ll be able to see the ruins of Urquhart Castle on the shore (the third busiest castle in Scotland, after Edinburgh and Stirling).
We’ll share with you many hidden gems; places that people often miss when they come to the Highlands. These include:
- A Chambered Cairn (which is also an Outlander book location).
- Huge Waterfalls.
- The ruins of a House where something rather wonderful was created!
Then, the journey through Glen Affric – one of the most beautiful Glens in Scotland – where you will step into scenery that looks like it belongs in the Jurassic period. (Other than Nessie during your morning boat trip, we promise no monsters will come lurking out of Glen Affric’s Ancient Caledonian Pine Forests… at least we hope not!)
You’ll finish the day with a walk through an Ancient Woodland Glen, renowned for its rushing burn, tall trees, and deep historical roots, including connections to Pictish Kings and the Fraser family, who owned the land for over 500 years and planted those very trees.
DAY NINE – SATURDAY – THE PORTSOY ADVENTURE
Portsoy’s picturesque 17th Century Harbour is the oldest, and one of the most beautiful, along this stretch of the Moray coastline.
This day of the tour is rich in Scottish culture, heritage and history. We’ll begin with a visit to the entrance of mighty Fort George, built from 1747 after the Battle of Culloden. This huge imposing Fort was built to quell any further uprisings and is an occupied and working Fort to this very day.
We’ll follow that with a visit to several places of interest:
- A Fishertown
- White Sandy Beaches
- 16th Century Castle
- 9th Century Unique Relic
- Elgin Cathedral
Once we arrive in Portsoy, we’d recommend trying some Portsoy Ice-cream. Then we’ll guide you on a tour through the town, sharing all the hidden nuggets along the way. The tour will include the beach, an ancient well, the harbour and Portsoy Marble (some of which is in the Palace of Versailles).
Portsoy’s famous 17th century Harbour featured in ‘Peaky Blinders‘ and also in the 2016 remake of the classic Scottish movie (which is also a true story) – ‘Whisky Galore‘.
After that, you’ll explore a unique 13th century village, where you will meet a Medieval Knight!
Then we’ll visit the town of Cullen (home of Cullen Skink), where you can enjoy some retail therapy, including antique shops, antiquarian book shops and more.
We finish the day with a visit to a gorgeous shop which specialises in high quality Scottish fare… we know you’ll enjoy it!
DAY TEN – SUNDAY – THE NORTH-EAST COAST ADVENTURE
This day will take you on a different section of the famous North Coast 500 route (NC500) – north east from Inverness, a scenic journey along the coastline with many hidden gems along the way…
- Visit a coastal town and step inside the Cathedral where Madonna was married.
- Walk through the thick stone walls of an Iron Age Broch dating back 2000 years.
Explore Dunrobin Castle and Gardens, including a 30 minute Falconry Display. The Castle resembles a French château with its towering conical spires. Once inside, you’ll be able to explore the many rooms which are open to guests. This 189 room Castle is the most northerly of Scotland’s great houses. It is also one of Britain’s oldest continuously inhabited houses dating back to the early 14th century, and is home to the Earls and later, the Dukes of Sutherland. The Castle was used as a naval hospital during the First World War and as a boys’ boarding school from 1965 to 1972, before being opened to the public.
Enjoy lunch and a dram beside a beautiful white sandy beach.
Explore an Ancient Museum which stands upon sacred ground and features archaeological digs and stone artwork created by the Picts dating back to the 8th century. Their collection includes early Medieval tools, artefacts and moulds used to create religious masterpieces, such as chalices in gold, silver, enamel and glass. They also have ‘illuminated manuscripts’ of Pictish and Celtic influence from the local monks of the early middle ages. This unique museum has many stories to share, including one rather gruesome tale of murder…
We’ll finish the final day of the tour with a visit to the beautiful lady on the beach – the Mermaid of the North.
Just when you think the day is over, we’ll take you to see the Shandwick Stone – standing 2.7 meters high, the stone dates back to 780 AD and is celebrated for its detailed depictions, including a complex hunting scene with swordsmen and a crossbowman, a stylized elephant, and an ornate Christian cross on its eastern face.
After that, we’ll bid our farewells after we take you back into Inverness.

This allows you to choose overnight accommodation which suits your budget and meets your individual needs. Choosing a self-catering Airbnb also means you have the option to make your own meals, instead of having to eat out every night. Most Airbnbs come with a fully equipped kitchen, a washing machine for your laundry, a living and dining area, allowing you to have all the comforts of home while in the Highlands. There are a wonderful selection of properties available near Inverness town centre, or in Culloden. IMPORTANT: Please discuss with us which accommodation you intend to book BEFORE committing to a hotel or an Airbnb, so we can advise whether its location will be feasible for daily pick-up and collection in the minibus. The tour begins at 8.00am each morning and finishes at around 5.00pm.
You need rest-room breaks frequently.
There are a few days on this tour when we won’t have access to public restrooms for up to two hours.
You prefer a restaurant lunch every day.
Guests enjoy two sit-down restaurant lunches on this tour, and there are eight days when the group enjoys picnic lunches. We always ensure you have special views to enjoy a picnic. We’d have to remove too many great locations from the itinerary to make time for restaurant lunches every day.
Your main reason for coming is to record or share the tour online or with friends.
Our tour commentary, stories, explanations and presentation are the intellectual property of Tour the Scottish Highlands Limited. Guests may not video, audio-record or otherwise record Andy or Diane delivering any part of the tour, nor may recordings or written accounts of our tour commentary be published or shared online. You can’t speak English fluently.
We share so much history and so many stories on this tour, that being able to understand them is an essential part of the overall experience. We can’t allow for translation on board, as it would affect the experience for the other guests.

Your Deposit secures your place – A 20% non-refundable deposit of £640 per person is payable to book and secure your place on the tour. The full cost is £3200 per person. Deposits are non-transferable. Please note, we do not accept additional payments/instalments until the final payment is due. The remainder of your payment will be due 120 days prior to your touring dates. If you are within the 120 days when you pay your deposit, then we will forward a payment request to you for the remainder of the payment once we receive notification of your deposit.
